What is SDG 13?
SDG 13 — Climate Action — is one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015. It calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. While governments and corporations carry most of the responsibility, individual action at the local level is increasingly recognised as a critical part of the solution.
The local-global connection
It can feel overwhelming to think about climate change as a global problem — so overwhelming that people disengage entirely. But most climate scientists now emphasise that the transition to a sustainable world will be won or lost at the local level: in communities, cities, and grassroots organisations.
When you volunteer for an environmental organisation in your city, you're not just cleaning a park. You're:
- Building green infrastructure that absorbs carbon
- Restoring biodiversity that makes ecosystems more resilient
- Educating communities about sustainable practices
- Supporting the civil society organisations that advocate for policy change
Environmental volunteering opportunities on Hero
Hero currently lists hundreds of SDG 13-tagged opportunities across the UK, including:
- Tree planting and woodland restoration — typically half-day or full-day events, no experience required
- Urban gardening and growing projects — recurring weekly roles, often in community gardens
- Climate education and outreach — skills-based roles for those with a background in communications or teaching
- Beach and river cleans — one-off events, family-friendly, high visibility impact
- Wildlife monitoring and surveys — structured roles with training provided, contribute to national datasets
How Hero tracks your SDG impact
Every opportunity on Hero is tagged with relevant SDGs by the hosting charity. When you complete a session, those SDG contributions are logged to your volunteer profile. Your personal SDG dashboard shows which of the 17 goals you're contributing to and how your impact accumulates over time — making your contribution visible, measurable, and shareable.
