From Recruit to Legend: one volunteer's 12-month Hero journey

Month 1 — Recruit

James signed up for Hero in March 2025. He'd been meaning to volunteer for years but kept putting it off. "I told myself I was too busy, or I'd start next month. Hero made it easy to stop making excuses — I found a beach clean 20 minutes from my flat and signed up in about three clicks."

That first session earned him 200 XP and his First Session badge. More importantly, it earned him something harder to quantify: proof to himself that he could do it.

Month 3 — Helper

By month three, James had completed eight sessions across three different charities — a conservation group, a food bank, and a mental health peer support charity. His Hero dashboard showed 500 XP, a three-week streak, and contributions to SDGs 2, 3, and 15.

"The streak mechanic was surprisingly motivating. Missing a week felt like I was breaking something. I'd find a two-hour session just to keep it going. Eventually it stopped being about the streak and just became habit."

Month 6 — Volunteer

At 1,000 XP, James reached the Volunteer tier. He'd logged 47 hours across 22 sessions and earned four badges including the coveted Earth Hero badge for his sustained environmental work. He started appearing on the local leaderboard.

"A charity messaged me through Hero to ask if I'd consider a more regular role. That felt like a step change — from being a volunteer to being a valued team member."

Month 9 — Advocate

James took on a recurring role as a weekly mentor at a youth charity. He was now volunteering 6-8 hours every week. His Hero profile showed 2,500 XP and a 14-week consecutive streak.

"I'd stopped counting the hours. It was just part of my life. The weird thing is that I have more energy now than I did before I started. I think I was running on empty without knowing it."

Month 12 — Champion → Hero

By March 2026, James had logged 112 hours across 51 sessions. He reached Champion tier (6,000 XP) in November and crossed into Hero (15,000 XP) in February — one of the fastest progressions Hero had seen.

He was named a monthly Earth Champion twice. Three charities cited him as one of their most reliable volunteers. He'd helped recruit six friends to the platform.

"I'm aiming for Legend by the end of the year. But honestly, the number is secondary now. Volunteering is just who I am. Hero gave me a way in — the rest followed."
